What the digits of an EAN-13 mean

The leading digits of an EAN-13 are the GS1 prefix. It shows which organisation issued the code, not the country of manufacture. Next come the company number and then the item number the company assigned.

The last digit is a check digit calculated from the other 12; it lets the scanner detect a misread.
