Direct thermal vs thermal transfer printing

Direct thermal needs no ribbon but fades over time; thermal transfer with a ribbon lasts longer.

In direct thermal printing the special paper darkens when heated, so the code gradually fades with heat and light. That is fine for quick-turnover shipping labels.

For racks and long-life labels use thermal transfer: the ribbon fixes the image and it resists abrasion.
